Apron and aircraft de-icing plane at the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport

Constructing the project

Realization of this project by our company covered construction of aircraft de-icing plane and extension of the existing apron. At the peak workload time the investment was carried out by 80 workers, whereas building materials and concrete were delivered by more than 8 000 vehicles. In order to realize both the aprona and the de-icing plane, we used more than 40 000 cubic meters of concrete.

We extended the existing 80 x 145 m apron west- and southwards, i.e. towards the newly constructed passenger terminal. The apron’s surface was extended by 38000 square meters.

Concrete aircraft de-icing plane with the size of 131x250 m was realized on the east side of the ALFA taxiway. We covered its surface with repellent finish, protecting concrete against absorption of water and chemical agents used for de-icing. Outside the winter season, the plane will function as a support apron.

Realization of the investment involved extension of the ALFA runway, realization of hard bituminous shoulders, horizontal signs and agrotechnical works. Electric power works covered rebuilding of medium voltage line, assembly of edge navigation lighting and erection of 6 lighting masts (5 on the apron and 1 on the de-icing plane). We also installed an appliance used for starting up airplane motors, i.e. a converter with the frequency of  400 Hz together with power supply and cabling.

Sanitary works

We also carried out sanitary works related to dehydration and discharge of storm water from the  realized planes. Scope of works included construction of drainage system, storm water sewerage system and storm water intermediate pumping station. Waste water from de-icing stand, containing glycol and chemical agents used for de-icing of aircrafts, will be directed to the underground double-shell steel tank, which is equipped with leakage detection probe system. Two treatment systems will be used for pre-treatment  of storm water discharged from the apron area – each of them will include a coalescence separator with sand sedimentation tank, storm water overflow and a by-pass.

The greatest challange

Construction of the underground reinforced concrete tank with the capacity of 2000 cubic meters was the most difficult part of sanitary works. This facility will enable temporary retention of storm water and prevent the areas situated beneath airport planes from flooding during heavy rainfall. Construction of a facility of this size required implementation of specialist equipment, e.g. truck mounted crane with lifting capacity of 250 tons. Appropriate co-ordination of works enabled the airport to function in an ordinary way and did not cause any disturbance of airplane traffic.
