Birmingham New Street Station curved ceilings

  • Clark and Fenn, part of SRW engineering services, created and installed the new ceilings in Birmingham New Street Station

Clark and Fenn Skanska delivered the ceilings for the Birmingham New Street train station refurbishment and the Grand Central shopping centre.

The challenging and complex design included an innovative concept to install a bespoke curved panelling system within the buildings.

A working-size mock-up

A project of this scope and nature had never been undertaken before. The team produced two working-size mock-ups that replicated the buildings’ structural movement. These helped identify areas where movement joints could be reduced, enabling the overall design and finish to be improved.

The team also explored value-engineering options to deliver the project and enhance the design. This led to continual horizontal joints being eliminated, which reduced the risk of cracking and greatly improved the visual appearance.

3D modelling

A three-dimensional virtual model also enabled the team to completely engineer the project, with the glass reinforced gypsum (GRG) moulds being created using the latest technology, which kept site waste to a minimum.

The overall result is a distinctive design and finish that enhances the look of the buildings and the experience for passengers and shoppers.
