Skanska provided Owner’s Project Management Services for the development of a state-of-the-art, energy efficient bus transfer facility located at Union Station in Worcester, Massachusetts. The new facility consists of an eight-slip bus transfer platform, a 1 acre transfer station with a public waiting area with passenger and driver amenities, and an 8,000-10,000-SF building for WRTA administrative, customer service, travel training and brokerage offices.
The WRTA design team followed an integrated design process to incorporate sustainable attributes into the project. A charrette was conducted with the owner and design team members from all disciplines to explore potential strategies and technologies. Throughout the process, modeling tools were used to assist the teams in making decisions that were environmentally responsible and economically viable.
In addition to green building and site features, the installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic array generates a portion of the
electricity needed to power the bus transfer facility.
