Norra länken – an important piece of the puzzle for Stockholm’s traffic
The traffic situation in the Stockholm area will improve considerably once Norra länken (the Northern Link) is opened. The region’s competitiveness will increase with the improved communications.
Skanska has been assigned by the National Road Administration Stockholm to build two of Norra länken’s subprojects. One of these is the Värtan Interchange (NL52).
The Värtan Interchange links together Norra länken, Lidingövägen and Hamnvägen at Värtan. We are building concrete decking over Hjorthagsvägen, including ramps and roads.
The end result will be a two-level, 350-meter-long Interchange with connecting bridge ramps. The esthetic design is very important and is being created in collaboration with the City of Stockholm.
The project is of national interest due to its connection to Värtahamnen and Frihamnen, which are the country’s most important harbors for freight and passenger traffic to the Baltic States, Finland and Russia.
The Värtan Interchange will be completed in 2014 and the entire Norra länken will be inaugurated in 2015.
Facts about Norra länken:
Norra länken is one of Sweden’s largest road and construction projects, stretching between Karlberg and Värtan. Together with Södra länken (the Southern Link) and the Essingeleden expressway, they form a road system that diverts traffic around Stockholm’s city center.
Since Norra länken runs largely through tunnels, it will result in fewer disruptions and cleaner air for inhabitants. Fewer cars on the roads also mean improved traffic safety.
