In late 2004 / early 2005, Skanska built over 3-km section of Stalowa Wola bypass, called Podskarpowa Route. The bypass is located in the route of the national road No.77, one of the most important roads in the region of Podkarpacie which connects Lipnik with Sandomierz and Przemyśl.
At the stage of the tender and execution the investment was divided into two contracts: right and left roadway. The challenge we faced was to take into account the differences between two separate projects and then to propose and agree solutions satisfactory to the investor, project supervisors and designers and to meet the project deadlines.
The bypass constructed by Skanska begins at the crossroads of Brandwicka street (voivodeship road No. 855), where it joins the first section of the bypass realized before. The route ends in Agatówka, where state road No. 77 enters into crossroads with an exit road from Rozwadów.

Environment

We used ash-slag mixes from Stalowa Wola power plant to build the embankments. We reinforced embankment slopes with the use of biotextile, i.e. cotton fabric with grass seed sewed in and covered them with grass. The biotexile enabled simultaneous grass sowing and strengthening of the slopes in a quick and firm way.
We also minimized the environmental impact by installing rainwater purification systems: surface settling tanks, sand filters and settlement tanks.
During execution of earth works in Charzewice, we uncovered the remnants of an old biological sewage treatment plant which was out of operation. The sludge from the settling tank was neutralized. We also managed to incorporate this unplanned variation into our schedule without disrupting the appointed deadlines.

Benefits for the community

Trasa Podskarpowa reroutes the transit traffic away from Stalowa Wola downtown. The bypass improved the comfort of living for the local inhabitants and increased traffic safety.
At the crossroads of the bypass with voivodeship road No. 855 we built an antivibration wall and wooden acoustic barrier as well as traffic islands which arrange traffic properly and increase the safety of pedestrians and drivers. Similar traffic islands were built at the crossroad with state road No. 77.
