Lighting up Surrey
Surrey is a county in the southeast of England, bordering London to the southwest of the city. With a population of 1.1 million people, it is one of England's most densely populated areas.
This project involves initially replacing 69,000 street lights and the refurbishment of a further 19,000 street lights in the first five years. Within this contract we also maintain all street lights and illuminated signs and bollards from contract commencement for a period of 25 years.
Much of this contract’s objective centres on increasing the energy efficiency of Surrey’s lighting assets, and increasing its durability over the long-term. Many of the improvements are undertaken with this in mind.
For example, existing yellow/orange lights will be replaced with more energy efficient white light sources. Individual lighting columns will be remotely controlled from a new control centre near the town of Guildford, leading to improved levels of service and significant environmental benefits.
Skanska has invested approximately GBP 4.5 M, SEK 54 M, during the project period, representing its 50 percent share of the special purpose company.
